Course Description:
SLS 462 INTRODUCTION TO SIGN LANGUAGE STUDIES
Analysis of the sumbolic and linquistic structure of American Sign Language and other Sign systems. Includes aspects of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, grammar and discourse. Examination of bilingual and bicultural practices, sociolinquistics and related research. Prerequisite: SLS 202 and ENG 262 and/or departmental approval.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
a) To examine the linquistic structure of American Sign Language.
b) To compare/contrast the linguistic features of American Sign language with other sign languages and related sign systems.
c) To identify the impact of linguistic research on American Sign Language and educational opportunities for Deaf children and adults.
d) To analyze the implications of American Sign Language on social and educational systems within bilingual and bicultural contexts.
e) To investigate the interaction of medical and sociocultural models of deafness and the sociopolitical affect on Deaf children and adults.
