SLS 428 SIMULTANEOUS COMMUNICATION 3 sh

Theory and application: Emphasis on the cognitive and sociolinguistic characteristics of simultaneous communication and its role in education. Includes analysis of the psycholinguistic implications of simultaneous communication. Prerequisite: SLS 302 or placement.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

a) To identify and apply communicative principles of speaking and signing simultaneously.

b) To develop a theoretical understanding of simultaneous communication and how this translates into application.

c) To analyze linguistic aspects of simultaneous communication, including alternate sign selection and English lexical equivalents.

d) To examine the role of simultaneous communication in selected settings by applying sociolinguistic features of both spoken and signed English.

e) To review research articles to document the effectiveness and appropriateness of simultaneous communication in social and educational settings.

f) To examine the sociolinguistic and sociopolitical implications of simultaneous

communication.
