Artist's Statement

This work looks at the process of artmaking that defines the ontological aspect of aesthetic process. What are the signs and symbols that people make that can amalgamate their existence? What is the function (a process on going and gone through) that the artist / poet performs?

What does the footprint in the sand signify?

I am interested in the metaphor, the simile and the analogy. Decoding this work requires a knowledge of the symbols.

I am interested in the boat as a form and concept!

Boats have the ability to carry us into a hostile environment. They signify a means of survival
(the life of the artist and poet - analogy - a vehicle for survival).

The OVAL is the primitive mask, mystical modification of the personality / spirit.

The TRIANGLE is the sail of the boat. a vessel to transport and protect.

The TITLE tells a story of ancient exploration, a metaphor for Columbus, Magellan, Cook and St. Brendan, the search for the Orient, the astronauts and the search for the universe, human beings and our search for understanding.

Truly yours,

Douglas Semivan.
